Trisomic Rescue" In early 2025, a team of researchers led by Dr. Ryotaro Hashizume at Mie University and Fujita Health University in Japan published a pioneering study in the journal PNAS Nexus. Down syndrome is caused by an extra copy of chromosome 21, a condition known as Trisomy 21. Historically, science has only been able to manage the symptoms of Down syndrome, as there was no way to fix the underlying genetic cause at a cellular level. Using advanced CRISPR-Cas9 gene editing technology, the Japanese team successfully targeted and eliminated the extra copy of chromosome 21 from affected human cells. Furthermore, once the extra chromosome was cleared, the corrected cells began to function normallyโ€”showing improved cell growth, normalized gene expression patterns, and restored cellular health.
