The modern European nation-state system is traced to the Peace of Westphalia (1648), which ended the Thirty Years' War and established the principles of state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and non-interference in internal affairs. From this 17th-century watershed, the distinctly modern conception of sovereign, legally equal states forming an international system developed.
