ATP (adenosine triphosphate) is the universal energy currency. Energy released from substrate oxidation is conserved as ATP via substrate-level phosphorylation or oxidative phosphorylation. NADH and FADH₂ are electron carriers that feed into the electron transport chain to generate ATP, making ATP the final common energy unit for all biosynthetic work.
