Unstructured models (e.g. Monod) treat biomass as a single homogeneous entity — all cells are identical. Structured models divide the cell into compartments (e.g. DNA, RNA, protein, wall) and account for how intracellular composition changes with growth rate, nutrient shifts, and stress. Structured models better predict transient behaviour after disturbances but require more parameters and experimental data for validation.
