Downstream processing (DSP) encompasses all steps after fermentation to recover and purify the product: cell separation → cell disruption (if intracellular) → primary recovery → purification → polishing → formulation. DSP can account for 60–80% of total production cost for high-value biologics. The key challenge is achieving high purity while maximising yield and minimising processing steps.
