For extracellular products, cells are the contaminant — they are removed first. Centrifugation (continuous disc-stack centrifuges) or tangential flow filtration (TFF)/microfiltration separate cells from the product-containing broth. This clarified supernatant then undergoes concentration and purification steps. For intracellular products, cell disruption (homogenisation, bead milling) must precede separation.
