Sandstone is the most common and effective petroleum reservoir rock because it has high porosity (spaces between grains to store hydrocarbons) and high permeability (interconnected pores allowing fluid flow). Granite is crystalline with negligible primary porosity; shale has very low permeability (acts as a seal/source); and rock salt is impermeable and is used as a cap rock or creates diapir traps.
