Transgression is the seaward-to-landward advance of the sea over land, typically associated with rising sea level or land subsidence. It produces retrogradational stacking patterns in the stratigraphic record — fining-upward sequences as finer, deeper-water sediments overlie coarser, shallower-water ones. The opposite process — sea retreating from land — is called regression.
