Latitude and longitude define an absolute location — a fixed, mathematically precise position on Earth's surface expressed in angular degrees from the equator (latitude) and from the Prime Meridian (longitude). Absolute location is independent of surrounding features. In contrast, relative location describes a position with reference to other places (e.g. 'north of the river').
