Seismology is the study of earthquakes and the propagation of elastic (seismic) waves through the Earth. It provides information about Earth's internal structure (crust, mantle, core), earthquake mechanisms, and subsurface properties. Geodesy studies the shape and size of Earth; structural geology studies deformation of rocks; plate tectonics is a theory of lithospheric dynamics (informed by seismology but is not a study discipline per se).
