Ox-bow lakes form in mature rivers with highly sinuous meanders. As a meander loop becomes extremely curved, the river eventually cuts through the narrow neck of the meander during a flood, taking the shorter path. The abandoned meander loop is cut off and becomes an isolated, crescent-shaped ox-bow lake. Over time, it may fill with sediment and vegetation to become an ox-bow swamp or marsh.
