An island is a landmass completely surrounded by water on all sides. A peninsula is surrounded by water on three sides but connected to a larger landmass. A strait is a narrow water channel connecting two larger water bodies. A bay is a body of water partly enclosed by land. Islands may be continental (fragments of continental crust) or oceanic (volcanic or coral origin).
