Hydrothermal deposits are typically epigenetic — they form after the host rock was already in place. Hot, metal-bearing hydrothermal fluids migrate through fractures, faults, and permeable zones in pre-existing rocks, depositing ore minerals as temperature, pressure, or fluid chemistry changes. In contrast, syngenetic deposits (e.g. SEDEX, VMS) form simultaneously with the host sediment on the seafloor.
