A drive (or drift) is a horizontal mine excavation developed along the strike of an ore body, following the mineralisation. In contrast:

• Crosscut: horizontal excavation driven across the strike of the ore body (from a shaft or level)
• Raise: vertical or steeply inclined excavation driven upward from a lower level
• Shaft: vertical or inclined excavation providing primary access to the mine from surface
