Hagfishes (class Myxini) are the only living vertebrates that are completely scaleless. They are jawless, soft-bodied, eel-like fish that produce copious mucus. Sharks have placoid scales (dermal denticles); bony fishes have cycloid, ctenoid, or ganoid scales; Ostracoderms are extinct armoured jawless fish.
