Glycolysis (Greek: 'glucose splitting') is a 10-step metabolic pathway in the cytoplasm that converts one molecule of glucose ($\text{C}_6\text{H}_{12}\text{O}_6$) into two molecules of pyruvate ($\text{C}_3\text{H}_4\text{O}_3$), with a net yield of 2 ATP and 2 NADH. Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) is a penultimate intermediate, not the final product. Fructose can enter glycolysis after conversion but is not the direct substrate.
