Type O individuals are universal donors for red blood cells because their red cells lack both A and B antigens, so anti-A and anti-B antibodies in the recipient's plasma cannot react with them. In contrast, Type AB individuals are universal recipients because they have neither anti-A nor anti-B antibodies in their plasma. Note: universal donor status applies to packed red cells, not whole blood transfusions.
