Predatory fish (carnivores) have a well-developed, muscular stomach for digesting animal prey, and a shorter intestine relative to body length compared with herbivorous fish of the same size. This is because animal protein is more easily digested and absorbed than plant cellulose, requiring less intestinal surface area. Herbivorous fish have longer, more convoluted intestines to process plant matter.
