Silverfish (Lepisma saccharina) are primitive wingless insects (order Zygentoma) that feed on carbohydrates and polysaccharides. They commonly damage book bindings, paper, wallpaper, and starchy materials in homes and libraries, feeding on the glue, sizing, and cellulose. They also eat clothing (natural fibres), but book damage is their most notorious economic impact.
