The adult human kidney is the metanephros — the most advanced of the three embryonic kidney types. The pronephros is the earliest, transient, and non-functional in humans; the mesonephros functions temporarily in the embryo (weeks 4–8) before degenerating; the metanephros forms from week 5 onward and becomes the permanent, functional adult kidney with its complex nephron structure.
