An ecotype is a locally adapted population within a species that has evolved distinct genetic traits in response to specific local environmental conditions (soil chemistry, altitude, climate) while remaining capable of interbreeding with other populations of the same species. It is distinct from a subspecies (which has broader geographic differentiation) and an ecomorph (a non-genetic morphological variant).
