The electric eel (Electrophorus electricus) can generate electric discharges in excess of 500 volts (up to ~860 V in some accounts). These high-voltage discharges are produced by electrocytes — specialised muscle-derived cells stacked like batteries in the eel's electric organs. Discharges are used for prey stunning, navigation (electroreception), and predator defence. The electric organ constitutes up to 80% of the eel's body.
