Adaptive radiation is the rapid diversification of a single ancestral species into multiple species, each adapted to a different ecological niche. Darwin's Galapagos finches descended from a single South American finch ancestor and diversified into ~15 species with different beak shapes adapted for different food sources (seeds, insects, cactus).
