Most mammals are diphyodont — they develop two successive sets of teeth: deciduous (milk/baby) teeth and permanent (adult) teeth. This contrasts with most non-mammalian vertebrates, which are polyphyodont (continuous tooth replacement throughout life). Exceptions include elephants (six sets of molars), some marsupials, and cetaceans, which are monophyodont (one set).
