Lead (Pb) was historically the primary toxic metal in newspaper ink, used in traditional letterpress printing (lead type) and in some printing inks as a pigment (lead chromate). While modern inks have largely replaced lead with safer alternatives, lead contamination in newsprint remains an environmental and health concern. Lead is a cumulative neurotoxin. Cadmium and mercury are also toxic metals but are not specifically associated with newspaper production.
