Both mutation and gene flow introduce new alleles into a gene pool. Mutation creates entirely new alleles through changes in DNA sequence (substitution, insertion, deletion). Gene flow (migration) transfers existing alleles from one population to another — introducing alleles that may be new to the receiving population. Natural selection changes allele frequencies but does not introduce new alleles; it acts on existing genetic variation.
