Terrestrial biodiversity peaks near the equator — a pattern known as the latitudinal diversity gradient. Tropical rainforests near the equator harbour over 50% of all terrestrial species despite covering only ~6% of Earth's land area. Multiple hypotheses explain this: higher solar energy input, stable warm temperatures year-round, higher precipitation, longer evolutionary history, and faster speciation rates. Biodiversity decreases progressively toward the poles.
