Movement of water and solutes through plasmodesmata (cytoplasmic connections between plant cells) follows the symplastic pathway. The symplast is the interconnected network of plant cell cytoplasm linked by plasmodesmata. Water moves from cell to cell through this living continuum. The apoplastic pathway moves water through cell walls and intercellular spaces (non-living portions), bypassing the plasma membrane. The transmembrane pathway crosses the plasma membrane multiple times via aquaporins.
