In the usual metric on $\mathbb{R}$, the open sets are precisely the unions of open intervals. A union of open intervals is always open. Arbitrary subsets may not be open; closed intervals like $[a,b]$ are not open; singletons $\{x\}$ are closed (not open) in $\mathbb{R}$ with usual metric.
