A space is totally disconnected if the only connected subsets are singletons. $\mathbb{R}$ with usual topology is connected (in fact, path-connected) — it is NOT totally disconnected. The discrete space is totally disconnected (every subset is both open and closed). $\mathbb{Q}$ is totally disconnected. A singleton space is trivially connected/totally disconnected.
