An element $x$ of a group satisfying $x^2 = x$ is called idempotent. In a group, since we can multiply both sides by $x^{-1}$: $x^2 = x \Rightarrow x = e$ (identity). So the only idempotent element in a group is the identity. An involution satisfies $x^2 = e$.
