When measuring high voltage, connect the COM (negative/ground) probe first, then the voltage probe — and when disconnecting, remove the voltage probe first. This prevents accidental shorting and reduces shock risk. Always set the range higher than expected voltage before measuring. Never use AC range for DC measurement — it reads RMS and gives incorrect values.
