Relaxation time (also called extinction debt) is the time lag between habitat fragmentation and the eventual decline of species richness to the new equilibrium level. After a habitat is fragmented, species do not go extinct immediately — the population decline takes time, creating a period where more species exist than the fragment can sustain long-term.
