The notochord is the flexible rod-like structure present along the dorsal midline in chordate embryos. In vertebrates, it is replaced during development by the vertebral column (spine). The notochord induces the formation of the neural tube (which becomes the nervous system) but is itself replaced by vertebrae in most vertebrates.
