Molybdenum (Mo) is an essential micronutrient required for nitrogen fixation. It is a component of the nitrogenase enzyme complex (specifically the FeMo-cofactor of the MoFe protein) in nitrogen-fixing bacteria such as Rhizobium found in legume root nodules. Without Mo, nitrogenase cannot reduce atmospheric N\(_2\) to ammonia.
