In pteridophytes (ferns and allies), the sporophyte generation (diploid, 2n) is the dominant, independent, and conspicuous phase — the familiar leafy fern plant. The gametophyte (haploid, n) is a small, inconspicuous, short-lived prothallus. This contrasts with bryophytes where the gametophyte is dominant, and represents an evolutionary advancement.
