Cotyledons are the seed leaves (embryonic leaves) present inside the seed. In dicots there are two cotyledons. They are the first leaf-like structures to emerge from a germinating seed and often serve as the primary source of nutrition for the seedling. The hypocotyl is the stem below cotyledons; epicotyl is above; radicle becomes the root.
