Algae contain chloroplasts in every photosynthetic cell of their thallus. Algal chloroplasts come in diverse shapes (cup-shaped, ribbon-like, stellate) and contain photosynthetic pigments. Fungi have no chloroplasts at all (they are heterotrophs). Bryophytes have chloroplasts in their green cells but not every cell (e.g., rhizoids lack them). Lichens are fungal-algal symbioses.
