The central conflict is Identity vs. Role Confusion — adolescents explore who they are, their values, and their future roles in society. Successful resolution leads to a strong sense of identity (ego identity). Trust vs. Mistrust is infancy (Stage 1); Integrity vs. Despair is late adulthood (Stage 8).
