Anomie, as theorized by Durkheim in 'Suicide' (1897) and 'The Division of Labour in Society' (1893), refers to a state of normlessness in which social norms are unclear, absent, or no longer binding on individuals — producing social instability, moral deregulation, and elevated rates of deviant behavior including suicide.
