Fertigation — applying dissolved fertilizers through the irrigation system — achieves high NUE by placing nutrients at the root zone when and where needed. It allows split applications synchronized with crop uptake patterns, reduces volatilization and surface runoff losses, and is compatible with drip (most efficient) and sprinkler systems.
