Oscillatoria is a cyanobacterium that performs oxygenic photosynthesis — it uses water as the electron donor and releases O₂ as a byproduct, just like plants. Chlorobium (green sulfur bacteria), Chromatium (purple sulfur bacteria), and Rhodospirillum (purple non-sulfur bacteria) are anoxygenic photosynthesizers — they do not release oxygen.
