Heterospory (production of two types of spores — microspores and megaspores) is the most critical precondition for seed habit. The megaspore is retained within the megasporangium, the female gametophyte develops endosporically, and after fertilization it is nourished by the parent plant — essentially forming a seed. This is seen in Selaginella and Salvinia among pteridophytes.
