Agrobacterium tumefaciens is a soil bacterium used extensively as a natural genetic engineer in plant transformation. Its Ti (tumour-inducing) plasmid can be modified to carry a gene of interest and insert it stably into the plant genome. It is the most widely used vector for introducing foreign genes into dicot crop plants.
