In Sphagnum (a moss), the gametophyte is the dominant, free-living, independent phase of the life cycle. Both male and female gametes are produced on the free-living gametophyte. In seed plants like mustard, castor, and Pinus, the gametophytes (pollen grain and embryo sac) are microscopic and completely dependent on the sporophyte.
