The cell walls of algae are composed of cellulose, galactans, and mannans (polysaccharides). Some algae also have additional components: diatoms have silica; red algae have agar and carrageenan (both galactans). This distinguishes algal walls from plant walls (cellulose + hemicellulose + pectin) and fungal walls (chitin).
