Rhodospirillum is a free-living, anaerobic, photosynthetic nitrogen-fixer (purple non-sulfur bacterium). Azotobacter and Beijerinckia are free-living but aerobic nitrogen-fixers. Rhizobium is symbiotic (lives in legume root nodules). Rhodospirillum fixes nitrogen under anaerobic conditions using light energy.
