Muslims conquered Spain in 711 CE under the leadership of Tariq bin Ziyad. He crossed the Strait of Gibraltar (named after him: Jabal Tariq) and defeated the Visigothic Kingdom. Muslim rule in Spain lasted for nearly 800 years, bringing great advancement in science, art, and architecture.
