Zakat was made obligatory in 2 AH (After Hijrah) in Medina. While charity (Sadaqah) was encouraged from the beginning, the formal system of Zakat with specific rates and categories was established in the second year after migration. This timing coincides with when the Muslim community in Medina needed a systematic welfare structure. Zakat became one of the Five Pillars of Islam, making it a fundamental obligation.
