Dendrites are the branching extensions of a neuron that receive incoming signals (synaptic inputs) from other neurons. The axon transmits the outgoing signal away from the cell body toward the axon terminals, where neurotransmitters are released into the synapse. Myelin sheath insulates the axon to speed up signal transmission.
